If ever there was such a thing as devils being in the detail, Brexit was it. Lots of “Big Picture” guys pushing it with, as seen in the divorce talks, little care for or knowledge of the intricacies. Butcher vs brain surgeon. Partly the EU’s fault for spending so much time on things that would not be noticed much and not enough time on explaining why.

This is a wise take. I agree that Starmer was bold. In this connection, you don’t mention probably the boldest concession he made, namely, on dynamic regulatory alignment if and when the UK joins the Single Electricity Market and, implicitly, in any other area of the Single Market for goods that they may wish to get into. Given the size difference between the UK and the EU this is, realistically, inevitable. Nevertheless, a commendable show of realism. When making the point to a British think tank colleague she told me: ‘don’t tell the tabloid press’.

BTW If one reads closely - as I had to do - the Northern Ireland Protocol as agreed by Boris Johnson one can hardly believe how far he went in effectively allowing the ‘Irish Sea’ border - the exact contrary to what he was claiming at the time. One should give the ‘boring’ Rishi Sunak credit for arriving at a more balanced - by admission even of the EU side - relationship with the Windsor Framework, Johnson probably elevated lying to unprecedented levels in UK politics at least.
