Well put, Bill, a good use of the play the ball and not the man analogy. The saga is a sad reflection of the state of British politics. (Not that the state of Japanese politics is much better.)
I suspect that the government got what they wanted; attention on the policy was drawn away by the attention given to the free speech issue. It created yet another ‘them & us’ situation, which seems to be the only goal they have. The policy itself is click bait. They can say that they have tried their best to deal with immigration - get small boats done! - but it’s the ‘lefties’ fault its not worked.
